Welcome to the Department of Mathematical and Computer Sciences!

The Mathematical and Computer Sciences Department offers a liberal arts major, leading to a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts in mathematics from the College of Letters and Sciences; or a teaching major, leading to a Bachelor of Science in Education from the College of Education. Students can choose among five different emphases:

• BA/BS Pure Mathematics - 37 Credits
• BA/BS Mathematical Statistics - 38 Credits
• BA/BS Computer Mathematics - 37 Credits
• BA/BS Applied Mathematics - 37 Credits
• BSE Mathematics for Secondary Education - 39 Credits

The department also offers a liberal arts major, leading to a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts in computer science from the College of Letters and Sciences:

• BA/BS Computer Science - 36 Credits

Each emphasis of the mathematics major consists of 6 - 7 core courses and additional specialized courses in the student's area of concentration. The computer science major consists of 8 core courses plus 4 emphasis courses (2 courses from each of 2 emphasis areas). Both BA and BS degree choices provide students with a strong background for advanced study at the graduate level. Sample 4-year plans for all degrees are posted in the Student Resources section.

In addition, the department offers several minors/emphases for students who would like a stronger background in computer science and mathematics to complement their chosen major.

Student Organizations
The department sponsors the Student Math Association (SMA), a student chapter of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA). Students joining the (SMA) have the option of becoming student members of the MAA. Activities include sponsoring visiting actuarial and other speakers, bowling, and softball socials.

Faculty and Staff
The department has 37 faculty and staff. They incorporate new ideas and technology into the classroom, drawing from their own research, which has resulted in presentations at state, national, and international conferences.
