Personal Information and photo links below :
- (mother) Charlotte Judd Davids, born at Mare Island Navy Yard,
California, on 27 April 1875. Her mother (Adeline Coy Brown) died on 14 Sept 1878 of
cholera in China, her father died of Bright's disease on 8 Feb 1888, and Charlotte Judd
was raised by an older cousin [Maria (Cox) Adams] in Racine, Wisconsin. Charlotte married
James McKay in Kenosha, Wisconsin, on 31 Dec 1893. A son Calvin Davids was born in
Chicago on 25 Feb 1895. James McKay died of tuberculosis on 20 April 1896 (buried at
Forest Home in Chicago). Charlotte re-married Dr. George Harrison
Edgerton (a dentist) on 25 April 1899, having 3 children Emmett, Florence, and
Charlotte. She died 13 September 1939. Her obituary
is a touching story!
- Angus McKay, buried at Forest Home Cemetery in Chicago in a family plot containing his son James,
his wife Catherine, and a Janice McKay.
- (father #1) James Robert McKay, born in Chicago on 23 Dec 1870, son of
Angus McKay and Catheran Harris.
James McKay married Charlotte Davids, and this couple had one son
Calvin Davids, but James died of tuberculosis
on 20 April 1896. Buried at Forest Home in Chicago, which verified the death date.
- (father #2) George Harrison Edgerton, born 27 Sept 1868, son of
Thomas Emmet Edgerton and Rachel X. Married Charlotte Judd (Davids) McKay in Oak Park,
Illinois on 25 April 1899. He was a dentist. The couple had a son Emmett and daughters
Florence and Charlotte. George died 5 November 1937
- Calvin Davids McKay, born 25 February 1895 in Chicago, listed in his mother's obituary as living in Evanston, Illinois.
The Evanston city directories of 1935 and 1939 list "Colvin D. McKay (Elsie H., 1)
printer (Chgo) h906 Oakton Apt 3" ; the 1948 Evanston directory lists "McKay,
Calvin D. (H Elsie) v-pres chgo, h3034 Isabella" and he is listed as having a phone.
"Colvin" was spelled that way in the earlier directories, and the "1" seems to imply
that one minor child lived with this family. The 1995
obituary for his half-brother Emmett mentions that
Calvin had already died. The settlement of the Will of H.S. Davids
mentions that Calvin had a daughter Ruth Ann McKay. Calvin
listed in the California Death records, died on 3 April 1965
in San Diego (his daughter may have lived there), buried with his wife Harriet Elsie
in Memorial Park Mausoleum, Skokie ; Harriet died in
La Jolla (San Diego) on 3 March 1978 .
- Harriet Elsie (maiden name unknown), born 8 Oct 1893 (Soc. Sec. death index, )
second wife of Calvin Davids McKay, married before 1935, having no children with him.
Died 3 March 1978 in La Jolla, California, buried
with Calvin in Memorial Park Mausoleum, Skokie. This couple apparently lived much of
their lives in or near Evanston, Illinois.
- Emmett Edgerton, born George Emmett Edgerton on 19 February 1906, married
Della Boers but had no children;
Emmett died 1996. Della died
early in 2000 and had a twin sister, Frieda, who lives in Elmhurst, Illinois, as of
November 2000.
- Florence Edgerton, married Harold Purkey, had one biological son (Russell)
put up for adoption who lives in
Sandwich under another surname. Tom McFarland spoke to Russell in November 2000, but he did
not acknowlege any relationship to Florence; Florence's second son Wendell lived
near Bloomington, Illinois, but (according to Edward Jandt) died childless. Florence once
lived in Pearl City, Illinois, where her husband owned an auto garage.
- Charlotte Rachel Edgerton, born 19 January 1913 in Sandwich, Illinois; married Mr.
Lane [mentioned in her mother's obituary but not in her
own] and lived in Creve Cour, Illinois. She married Howard Jandt on 28 January 1950
; Howard had two sons William H. and Edward R. by an
earlier marriage to Monica Schumacher, and Charlotte helped raise these sons, but
appears to have had no children of her own. Charlotte Rachel Jandt
died 14 October 1995. This account was (in part) given by
Edward R. Jandt of Spicer, Minnesota in November 2000 .
- William H. Jandt, step-son of Charlotte Rachel Edgerton, has
saved memorabilia from Carlotte Rachel Jandt's family,
including letters from Japan.
Tom McFarland met with Bill and Sherry Jandt in August 2001, and borrowed many saved
items.
Information about these people greatly assisted by Barbara Hoffman and Kenny Bastian, both of
Sandwich. Kenny's wife (Darlene) knew Emmett, Delia, and both of Florence's sons.
Dates for descendents of H.S. Davids come from a record in a bible.
