Record of the line of descent of Charlotte Judd Davids and Arthur Seymour Brown, from the
Sudbury Mass. Brown family.
Drawn up by Calvin Brown Sept. 11th 1893.
William Brown (see page 35) settled in Sudbury about 1637, and is our first American ancestor.
He married Mary Bisbig or Bisby and from this union there were born seven children, among whom
was Hopestill Brown Esqr. as his name may still be seen on the family tomb in Sudbury.
(see page 573 of this book)
Hopestill Brown Esqr. was twice married, the first time to Abigail Haynes (page 36)
and the second to Dorothy Parris, the eldest daughter of Rev. Samuel Parris of Salem witchcraft
history (page 275). From this second marriage came another Hopestill Brown who, like his
grandfather Wm. Brown was a deacon in the Church. This Deacon Hopestill married Sarah Loring
Dec. 30 th 1746, she being a twin daughter of Revd. Israel Loring, a noted minister
of Sudbury. (see pages 353,354,355) the marriage taking place in Sudbury and resulting in the
birth of eight children of whom William Brown remained the elder and probably the principal
inheritor of the family estate, which he afterwards more equally shared with his younger brother
John, whose descendants still hold and occupy the portion thereof acquired by them.
The last mentioned William Brown on December 1st 1775, married Susanna Williams, and from this
marriage there were born one daughter and eight sons ("seven" is crossed out)
among whom was Hayman Brown, he being the fifth in descent of the Sudbury Browns including his
great great grandfather who married Mary Bisbig or Bisby Novn 15th 1641.
This Hayman Brown, my Father, was born about one hundred and forty seven years after our first
American ancestor was married. - he married Martha Steinner for his first wife to whom were born
two children ; he was married to his wife Charlotte Pratt of Weymouth about 1815, myself
and brother Henry being the only issue of this second marriage.
I, Calvin Brown, was born March 25th 1816 in Roxbury Mass, and in that town on
May 31st 1832 was married to Susan W. Segar (this writer, in August 2001, is
not certain of the 4th letter "a" in "Segar", but in the family bible
the letter is clearly "a" ; an alternate spelling of the
wife of Matthew Robinson is "Mary Segar Potter"). We have had six children namely,
Francis Henry, who died in infancy, Harriette Elizabeth, Francis Edward, Arthur Nichols, who lived
two years and two months, Wilfred Langdon, and Adeline Coy. In my son Wilfred and
daughter Adeline, my grandchildren Arthur Seymour Brown and
Charlotte Judd Davids will recognise their own parents.
