Since Henry A. Cox was born in February 1860, and a "Henry A. Cox" is not listed in the
1860 census, it is likely that Henry A. Cox is
actually "Henry Alonzo Cox". Married Fannie Hummel on 1 January 1886, and
in a newspaper notice of this wedding he is named "Lon". A photo at age 10
identifies him as "Lonny". Worked as a clerk at the Chicago Tribune. Henry A. Cox died 10 March 1927
- Fannie Hummel ; a reference to her marriage suggests she may have
been nick-named "Lon". Born 2 October 1865 on the farm of her parents, Mr. J. M. and
Martha Hummel near Sandwich, Illinois. Married Henry A. Cox on 1 January 1886.
One daughter Martha J. Cox. Fannie died 5 January 1930.
There are several possible pictures
- Martha, named as attending the funeral of her grandmother
Emeline Cox. She is still called "Martha E. Cox" in 1927
in her father's obituary, and "Martha J. Cox" in 1930 in
her mother's obituary. In 1930, she had worked for
the Chicago Tribune newspaper for 15 years, and must have been about 42 years old, hence
may have never married or had kids. In the 1920 census, she is listed as age 28
(hence born 1892) and living with both her parents. The 1930 census lists a Martha Cox in Cook County,
Illinois, ward 48, block 242, precinct 21, as a lodger, age 36, single, born in Illinois (as were her parents),
whose occupation was listed as secretary at a newspaper, where she had gone to work on census day.
