Davids family history

• Henry Van Wart Davids, son of Abraham Davids and Nancy Van Wart, was born in New York City in 1803 and died in Fishkill Landing, N.Y. Feb 21, 1842. During his life he lived in both Fishkill and New York City. He was, like his father, the master of a Hudson River sloop, and also ran a grocery and worked as an inkmaker. The last few years of his life he was a dentist in Manhattan.
  Henry Van Wart Davids married on may 27, 1822, to Maria Brinckerhoff of Fishkill. Henry Van Wart Davids and Maria Brinckerhoff lived in Fishkill-on-the-Hudson in N.Y., attested also in a bible kept in the Edgerton family. Fishkill is 4 miles west the town named Brinckerhoff, both about 40 miles north of Manhattan. The will of their son Henry refers to a neice Mary Oscar Davids. This family has been extensively studied by James Downey.
• Maria Brinckerhoff, born Aug 21, 1806, married on may 27, 1822 (age 15), to Henry Van Wart Davids. Maria's mother was Phebe Boice, and her father Garret Brinckerhoff. She lived in Fishkill-on-the-Hudson in N.Y. After her husband's death in 1842 she brought the family down to Norfolk, Virginia, but before 1860, she returned to Fishkill where she lived with her brother Daniel. She died in Norwalk, Connecticut on June 8, 1885.
• A.M. Cox (Albert Montfort), born 1822 according to 1860 census, in New York. His obituary lists his birth as 28 July 1822, listed as "Hotel Manager" in 1860 Illinois census, where family is listed with about 10 hotel guests, suggesting that the Cox family lived on the hotel premises. Albert/Emeline Cox also listed in 1880 census from Sandwich, Illinois.

• Emeline E. Davids, born 2 April 1825 in Fishkill, New York. Listed as "Landlady" in 1860 Illinois census, with hotel property valued at $1500: she owned the hotel! In Sally's old photo album, a claim is made by Wm. W. Landis (a grandson) that Emeline died "when I was a small boy"; Wm. W. Landis was born in 1887, and attended Emeline's funeral in 1903. Adele Landis (in 1964) stated that Alice's mother came from the Davids family, and H. S. Davids is featured prominently in an old Cox Family Album. "H. S. Davids" turns out to be Emeline's brother Henry S. Davids, a prominent engineer in the U.S. Navy. H. S. Davids is listed as an "engineer" 30 years old in the 1870 Solano County (Vallejo, Calif) census (Pg 200), and is listed as born in Virginia (as was Maria E. Cox below), though the Davids obituary seems to contradict this. Emeline's obituary also mentions Emeline's sister "Mrs. Dr. V. Vermilye" who died long before 1903. Emeline's obituary decribes 2 children dying in infancy, but Jim Downey (in April 2005) names these lost infants as : Samuel Dodge Cox, Albert Garret Cox, and Oscar.
• Maria Emeline Cox (known as Mary and Emma in adulthood), born 1850 in Virginia (according to the 1860 Illinois census), married Walter G. Adams and lived near her parents in Sandwich for the 1880 census, listing her as "Mary E.", after marriage to Walter Adams moved to Racine, Wisconsin (according to Racine historian Pippin Michelli, 927 Main Street from 1897-1901) later moving to Ft. Wayne, Indiana (1903) and Jackson, Michigan (1904). 3 children, Lydia, Vinnie, and Albert. Mary Emma Died in 1906
• Ella Cox, born 1855 in Illinois; married Roland R. Landis ! One child, Nellie, who lived well into the 20^th century but never married
• Alice Louise Cox, born in 1857 in Illinois, married 4 Jan 1877 (#29487) in Illinois (no record of earlier marriage): listed as 3 years old in 1860 (above) Illinois census (Pg 245) for DeKalb County (Sandwich). This person produces the family lines Landis, McFarland, Illian, Valazza, etc. Alice divorced John Landis after 1895, assuming the name "Alice Landis Adams" sometime after 1904, the same surname as her oldest sister Maria. According to the Delavan cemetery, Alice died 27 March 1924 and is buried there under the name "Alice L. Adams", but is not buried in the Allyn plot where her daughter Louise is buried.
• Alonzo Cox, born 1860 in Illinois (see census above), "5/12 years old" at census time. "Alonzo" is not is not mentioned in either his mother's obituary or his father's obituary, but Kate Potter wrote his name on an 1870s photo in her album. Since Henry A. Cox was born in February 1860, and is not listed in the 1860 census, it is likely that Henry A. Cox is actually "Henry Alonzo Cox", and thus Henry and Alonzo are the same person. Henry and Alonzo could not be twins if their mother Emeline's obituary is believed, since she also bore 3 daughters all of whom lived into adulthood, but two of Emeline's 6 children "died in infancy".
• Henry A. Cox, apparently the youngest Cox child, listed as "Alonzo" in the 1860 census. Listed in his sister Ella's obituary, in his mother Emeline's obituary, and as "Lon" in a short undated honeymoon announcement in Carroll's scrapbook. A photo at age 10 identifies him as "Lonny". Henry apparently had one child, Martha, as stated in his obituary. Henry A. Cox died 10 March 1927. Henry and Alonzo are the same person : see Alonzo above.
• Henry Stephen Davids was born 4 April 1839, son of Henry Van Wart Davids and Maria Brinkerhoff. Married Adeline Coy Brown on 12 September 1872 in Mare Island, California, according to daughter Charlotte's record in her family bible. His obituary claims death in 1888 (family bible claims 8 Feb 1888). A photo in military dress, and a photo taken near his death.

• Adeline Coy Brown, born 18 July 1850 at Sacketts Harbor, N.Y. (headstone states birthdate as 26 July 1851), daughter of Calvin Brown and Susan Whitaker Segar. Married Henry Stephen Davids on 12 September 1872 in Mare Island, California. Died of Cholera in Shanghai, China on 14 Sept 1878. Buried at Mare Island, California
• Charlotte Judd Davids, born 27 April 1875, married James McKay on 31 Dec 1893. A son Calvin Davids was born in Chicago on 25 Feb 1895. James McKay died of tuberculosis on 20 April 1896 (buried at Forest Hills). Charlotte re-married Dr. George Harrison Edgerton (a dentist) on 25 April 1899, having 3 children Emmett, Florence, and Charlotte. She died Her obituary is a touching story!
• Phoebe Ann Davids, later Mrs. V. Vermilye, sister to Emeline E. (Davids) Cox, lived in (and likely born in) Fishkill, N.Y.; married 5 Nov 1845 to Valentine Mott Vermilye; Phoebe bore 8 children, including Leray and Oscar. Two children died in infancy. Phoebe died Dec 1874
