Joseph traded along the east shore of Lake Michigan to Mackinac Island and was shot in the back and killed by a drunken Indian on his way north to Mackinac Island.
Another account says that Joseph was murdered in the early summer of 1807 by a Winnebago Indian named White Ox near Grand Rapids, Michigan. :2089,p16
Yet another account says that Joseph wasl killed in 1809 near Grand River, Michigan by an Indian to whom he refused to give liquor. :2158
