Note in English written below: (1896) grandpa Olsen's grandfather's house in Norway - He was 91 when he got up on the roof to repair it (he told Joan Olsen)
English version of the above story, supplied by Nils Olsen in Oslo.
This story tells the history of the house Ole Gabrielsen Fyllingen owned in Kjellersmuget 12 in Bergen. The name consists of two parts [1] Kjeller = Basement or Cellar [2] smug or smuget or smauet = alley or narrow lane. The center of Bergen has a lot of "Smug". It is probably called Kjellersmuget because in the 16th century there lived a brewer who also had a taproom in the cellar. There sailors came to have a drink or a beer. Kjellersmuget is one of the oldest streets in Bergen. The story of "our" house starts with Karen Tollefsdatter early in the 17 th century. She gives it to a relative Michel Olsen, but she continues to live in the house. Michel Olsens son Ole Michelsen inherits the house; he is a shoemaker/cobbler. The house is thoroughly repaired in 1801 and some years later sold to Hans Larsen for 299 Rdl = 299 "riksdaler", an old norwegian currency. In 1807 Hans Larsens son Lars got the house and was sold by his widow to carpenter Ludvig Torkelsen Hovland. Hovland conveyed it to sutler Andreas Olsen whose widow in 1860 sold it to dikselmann Ole Gabrielsen Fyllingen for 430 spesiedaler, also an old norwegian currency. Dikselmann = skilled barrelmaker. He owned it for many years and sold it to Hedvig A Olsen who was a dressmaker. After this it has changed owners a couple of times. I`ll try to explain where Kjellersmuget is situated in Bergen: If you stand at the fishmarket looking out on the sea (West), about 200 meters out on your left hand side there goes a broad road up westwards. You come up to "Klosteret" on the hill, and then down on the other side of the hill is Kjellersmuget. One thing is interesting, this house is not far from the house where my mother's father, Knud Egeland, the canning specialist lived when he retired. |
