Here are some typical existing undergraduate research projects in Mathematical and Computer Sciences in the last few years:

Mathematical projects

  • A College Lesson Study in Calculus (2010). (Sponsored by UWW)

    Students: Michael Parham, Ray Parent, Aaron Kooping
    (Faculty Advisors: Geetha Samaranayake , Julie Letellier , Fe Evangelista )
      A general description of Lesson Study will be provided for those who are not familiar with this activity. The topic of our Lesson Study was integration by substitution in Calculus. We decided on this topic because of our past experiences and the understanding that some students struggle with the topic. The lesson we developed, taught, and revised used traditional and modern settings which focused on the introduction of the acronym 'SHAFTS' to assist students in recognizing and applying the steps in integration by substitution problems. Results of our study as well as observations of the process of Lesson Study and difficulties we encountered will be addressed.

Computer Science projects

  • Improving representation & Interpretation of quantitative concepts in biology learning module. (2010-2011) (Sponsored by UWW)

    Faculty advisor: Catherine Chan , Hien Nguyen
      Develop and implement a framework that enhances analyst effectiveness, supports active collaboration among analysts, and assists in the training of junior analysts by capturing user intent in the analytic process. Integrate this framework with other on-going projects in CASE program.
  • Enabling a Collaborative Problem-Solving Framework Through User Modeling of the Analytic Process. (2007-2009) (Sub-contractor from Dartmouth college, CASE program, Sponsored by DTO)

    Students: Jacob Russell, Adam Olson. Faculty advisor: Hien Nguyen
      Develop and implement a framework that enhances analyst effectiveness, supports active collaboration among analysts, and assists in the training of junior analysts by capturing user intent in the analytic process. Integrate this framework with other on-going projects in CASE program.
  • Simulation of Network Defects (2006) (Sponsored by UWW)

    Students: Nathan Smith, Jacob Russell. Faculty advisor: Bennette Harris and Hien Nguyen , and Mr. Jim Harris.
      We develop software that simulates errors that occur in an Ethernet networking environment at the packet level. We evaluate our approach quantitatively by measuring the elapsed time of an application running in a network with and without simulated defects.
