Personal Information and photo links below :
- John S. Landis, eldest son of Jacob, was also the eldest son of the eldest son of the
eldest son. Born 16 August 1776 in Douglas township, Montgomery county, Pennsylvania.
He came to Lancaster in 1797 from his father's place in Montgomery county and engaged in
business in the town where he remained for many years continuously, except for a short
residence in Middletown, Dauphpin County in the year 1806. Returning to Lancaster he
engaged in the merchandising business, in which he remained most of his life. He entered
into the activities of the town, serving as alderman and in other civic capacities. He
was a member of the fraternal order of Masons and was Master of the famous Lodge No. 43.
He was married on 19 June 1803, to Mary Klein, and died on 28 April 1850, and is buried
in the Lancaster cemetery.
- Mary Klein (or Kline, middle name unknown), daughter of (Johann) Michael Klein and Anna Maria
Grundaker. Born 7 August 1779, married John Landis on 19 June 1803, died 28 August 1858,
buried in the Lancaster cemetery. In August 2005, Jerry Sullivan of Oak Ridge TN points out that
the name "Grundaker" (used in the 1932 Landis reunion newslertter) perhaps should be spelled
"Gundaker", and Jerry further writes :
Saw your website on Landis family when I was looking for info on John Landis' wife
Mary Klein. Mary/Maria was the daughter as you have it of Michael Klein and Ann Maria
Gundacker. Notice that, in the baptism record from TLC (Trinity Lutheran
Church in Lancaster) Philip and Magdalena Klein were her sponsors. Philip and Magdalena
(Gundacker) Klein were my ancestors. Philip and Michael were brothers (the two Gundackers
were sisters) who came to Philadelphia/Lancaster in Sep 1774 on the same ship, Union, from
Rotterdam. I have been trying to figure out where Philip & Michael came from but no success
as yet.

- Ann Landis, born 3 June 1804, died 24 October 1814
- Michael Grundaker Landis, born 19 September 1805, was sent to sea in his early youth in the era of
the American "clipper" ships, which were so speedy that it was said they made seven
voyages in the China trade to a British ship's six. Michael Grundaker Landis by this
means visited all of the cheif seaports of the world before retiring from the sea.
On 25 July 1830, Michael Grundaker married Mary Lewis Quinn (b. 14 June 1808, d. 14 Feb
1896). His children were Charles Klein, Mary, Beulah, and Matilda. Charles Klein Landis
was a man of great versatility and of amazing business activity, which ranged from
controlling forests of lumber in northern Pennsylvania to founding towns and seaside
resorts in New Jersey. He was founder of Vineland, N.J., and was also founder and cheif
owner of Sea Isle City, N.J. He was a man of great wealth and when he died he put his
fortune at the disposal of his sister Matilda, who survived him many years. He had 2
sons. His sister Mary married William Bishop, and his sister Beulah married (it is said) a Mr.
Whitney. Matilda was unmarried and died 23 April 1932. Michael Grundaker died 7 Sept 1882
- Amelia Landis, born 8 December 1806, married Thomas Jeffries (as his second wife) on 21 April 1828.
Thomas Jeffries was a prominent citizen of Lancaster in his day. Their children were:
- John Landis Jeffries, born 3 Feb 1829, a captain of infantry in the Civil War, later moving to
Cincinnati where he died on 6 January 1901. His children were William Jeffries, Samuel L. Jeffries,
Amelia E. Jeffries, and Matilda Jeffries.
- Thomas Boyd Jeffries, born 30 October 1830, served in the Civil War, lifelong resident of
Lancaster. His children were Mary A. Jeffries, Samuel Bowman Jeffries, Sarah A. Jeffries, Charlotte Jeffries,
Charles Jeffries, Augustus Jeffries. Matilda Jeffries, Laura Jeffries, Caroline Jeffries, and John I. Jeffries
- Sarah Elizabeth Jeffries, born 31 December 1832, unmarried, lifelong resident of Lancaster
- Matilda Jeffries, born 8 August 1835, unmarried
- Joseph Chalkey Jeffries, born 1 May 1838, more data in Landis Family reunion records
- Robert McClure Jeffries, born 23 July 1842, more data in Landis Family reunion records
- a daughter, not named, who died at birth
- Maria Amelia Jeffries, more data in Landis Family reunion records
- a daughter, not named, who died at birth
Amelia died 28 Dec 1897.Thomas Jeffries died on 25 June 1850. Both buried in St. James
Churchyard, Lancaster
- Isreal Landis, born 17 October 1808, removed to the West early in life, settling in St. Joseph, Mo. He had a son John,
who was an officer in the army of the Confederate States of America.
- Matilda Landis, born 13 November 1809; married Henry Hinckley. They lived in Chicago, where he died.
They had no children. Rosehill Cemetery lists Matilda Hinckley (died 2 June 1887) buried
with her husband "William H. Hinckley" (died 11 July 1887) and her brother Edmund in the
Landis family plat, "SW Cor lot, No. 8, section K"
- Eliza Landis, born 23 July 1811; married David Landes (as spelled here). She was of a pioneering
spirit, and crossed the plains on a wagon train in the early days of the opening of the
west. She finally settled down in San Diego, where she died in 1903. She had no children
- John Peter Landis, born 22 January 1813; went west in the gold excitement in 1848 - never heard
from again.
- Ann Margaret Landis, born 2 January 1815; was unmarried and lived her life in Lancaster. Her last
years were passed with her nephew Edmund [Edmund M., son of her
brother], in Chicago, where she died 7 September 1884. Ann's burial record is rather complex:
she is buried with her brother in the Landis family plot in Rosehill Cemetery in
Chicago. However, Rosehill's records appear to indicate that Ann was dug up and re-buried in "Acacia Park"
Cemetery; but the "Acacia Park" in Chicago did not exist until about 1915, and this cemetery claims
not to host a person named "Ann Landis". However, Acacia Park in Chicago does contain a Bertha Ann Landis,
who died 28 May 1911 (possibly 28 April 1911), was originally buried in a row grave in Section J of Rosehill
(with int. no. 67858, removal number 89702 1/2), but was moved on 11 April 1924 to Acacia Park in Chicago
(Magnolia section, SE quarter of lot 1, block3, marked grave #1); it appears that Rosehill incorrectly
altered the burial record for Ann Margaret Landis, thinking that she (rather than Bertha) was the person moved
to Acacia Park. Thus, in spite of Rosehill's record that Ann Landis was moved to Acacia Park, Rosehill claims
that Ann Margaret Landis remains buried in the Hannah Landis plot, and was not moved to Acacia Park Cemetery.
- Edmund Landis, born 19 December 1816, was a physician who, after
practicing in the East, and having 3 sons
(Edmund M., Roland R., and John Wm), removed
to Chicago, where he died 7 May 1881
- Mary Ann Landis, born 4 February 1819, died 16 February 1841
- Aaron Landis, born 12 July 1820, died 15 August 1820
- Jesse K. Landis, born 15 October 1821, was a native and life-long resident of Lancaster where he in
early life took up the profession of law; he read law with Emanuel C. Reigart, and was
admitted to the bar in September 1843. His first wife, by whom he had no children,
was a Miss Jeffries from Chester County. His second wife was Miss Elizabeth Daniel, who
survived him many years, and died 31 March 1896. Jesse died 28 December 1873. Their
children were Mary Emma (born August 1851), Jessie Elizabeth (born 20 March 1853), Beulah J.
(born 5 August 1855), Charles Israel (born 18 November 1856), Matilda B. (born 25
December 1859), and James D. (born 14 March 1862). Mary Emma married Frank A. Diffenderfer
of Lancaster (later moving to Brooklyn, N.Y.) and had 7 children : Nellie, Joseph,
Mary, Elizabeth, Catherine, Florence, and Charles (who died young). Charles Israel
became President Judge of the courts of Lancaster County for 30 years, and married
Jessie A. Witmer, but had no children. James D. was a journalist and proprietor of the
Lancaster "New Era" ; he became wealthy and married Mary McNeal, but had no
children.
- Charles Klein Landis, born 2 September 1824, died 5 December 1826
Information about the above Landis family members comes from research by David Schmucker,
historian and genealogist for the Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society, 2215 Millstream Rd.,
Lancaster, Pennsylvania 17602-1499; research done March 2002 and primarily taken from a
contribution by Mr. Alburtus Rankin, of Mount airy, Philadelphia, printed in the
proceedings of the SEVENTEENTH REUNION of the LANDES - LANDIS - LANTIS FAMILY, dated
Saturday September 3, 1932, Perkasie Park, Perkasie, PA. A copy of the
Landis family coat of arms adorns the front cover.
