have been the result of the arrival of a new Curate—the Rev. Thomas Murray.

Some of the 1814 Account Book entries make comic reading today. In 1825 Mr. Burten got 2 shillings and 6 pence "for measuring the Roof". In 1818 9 pence was paid "for cleaning the steps, to Pat Huse child", and in May 1821 an anonymous wee chap earned his pathetic niche in the Chronicles of Kerog, when Churchwarden Thomas Simpson paid sixpence "To a little Boy for Carying the lock from Aughnacloy and nails for lock." Across 160 years we can picture the wee fellow trudging a large mortice lock through primrosed Tullyvar to his bounty in the Ulsterheart!

Or, in days of electric fences, we can ponder the art of James Robinson who in 1829 got £1-19-9 "for making three boards and letering for preventing travelers on the Sabath". Or, visualise the urgency of the 1820 Churchwarden who had to pay out five-pence "for sending for the key of the Chaole (coal?) hous to Jackson's hous."

That copperplate caligraphy which so many imagine to have been universal in more leisurely times, appears only in the flourished clarity of Edward Hull, Kerog Churchwarden in 1828. Elsewhere throughout the book the hand writing is atrocious, the ink pale, and the spelling ludicrous e.g., pulpitt, glaiser, roofe, barels, shovle, putying, sate (for seat), cloathing, (window) pains, shuites (for suits), and Hospitle.

All this is crowned with one superb malapropism. Someone has jotted down the date on which William Crothers began his term as Applotment Officer for the tithes. The note is scrawled on the fly-leaf of this 1814 Account Book—"August the 25 was the first Sunday of William Crothers Elopement."!!!

GRIST
The sultry days of Summer 1973 bored one of the twins to whom 'Ulsterheart' is dedicated until she was shown the 1824 Kerog Register. Five days she spent scanning the columns and counting the names given to the 330 children baptized between October 1824 and October 1829. Anne, Mary, and John she discovered
Page 158

were the most popular. Name preference had probably not changed much since St. Kerog's was built in 1622, for two centuries later the names of the Erskine heiresses still topped the chart. Here is the complete tally of the names of 150 years ago:—

Anne 35 John 31
Mary (1 May) 35 James 21
Jane 25 William 21
Elizabeth (1 Bessy) 25 Thomas 16
Margaret 19 Robert 15
Sarai (inc 3 Sarah & 4 Sally) 12 Alexander 6
Isabella 9 Joseph 5
Catherine (1 Kate) 8 Samuel 4
Ellen 5 David 4
Martha 3 Henry 3
Lydia 3 Hugh 3
Hester 2 Richard 2
Joanna 2 Stuart 2
Rachel 2 Edward 2
    Andrew 2

and one each of Susanna, Maria, Matilda, Barbara, Harriet, Gertrude, and Lotitia—Adam, Abraham, Joshua, Daniel, Matthew, Mark, Francis, Mervon, Arthur, Charles, Archibald, Moore, and Colhune.

Even the celebrity cults have not changed nomenclature that much. Here is J.W. Leaver of Ruislip's count of all births announced in the Times in 1973:—

James 214 Jane 125
John 152 Elizabeth 123
Alexander 124 Louise 109
Edward 124 Mary 101
William 112 Sarah 71
Charles 103 Catherine 65
    Emma 61

Kerog itself has changed more. The 1622 Church is gone. It was last used for worship in August 1832. Had it survived it would now be 360 years old—hallowed by the knees of ten gen-

erations of Kerogites and, incidentally, one of the few early 17th century churches in Ulster—a superb tourist attraction in the Ul-sterheart.

Its "materials" were put up for public auction, and knocked down to John Buchanan for £21-16-7 (Minute Book) or £ 21-17—7 (Account Book). Buchanan probably bought these things for the Methodist Church in Lisnawery, but it is doubtful if any of them survived when these good people moved to Ballynany in 1934.

One small purchase, made by the young curate, did survive. When the Author was moving from Richmount in 1964 he asked what would happen to a rickety old cupboard mouldering in the dank basement. "Take it with you for firewood" he was advised. As he nudged it away from the whitewashed wall he noticed its rat-gnawed feet, and the back like one vast pepper-castor, sponged by woodworm. Then, in the disturbed dust and coal slack, silted a long age around its toes, he spotted a narrow sheet of note-paper. Shaking off its grime, he noticed it fitted perfectly within four pieces of stamp selvage on the inside of the left door. In the subterranean gloom he could decipher an aged hand "This press and its contents belongs to my three daughters. I bought it when I lived in Crew. The doors of it where (sic) pew doors in old Ballinasaggart Church. John J. Moutray 15th Sept, 1885."

The Author replaced the back, and saturated the remainder with three periodic doses of a Rentokil-Creosote mixture. He then unscrewed the doors and brought them to Parkanaur workshops where, over many months, the thick skin of cheap dirty maroon paint was acid-softened and removed. Then the timber pores were re-furbished with oil, and the outer surface dust-sealed with the best quality clear varnish. Beside the one pound which he insisted on handing over when he first enquired about this 'firewood', the restoration was costly. But they are among the few relics of the 1622 Church. Here is the complete inventory. 1. Font 2. Chalice 3. Registers (1812-'32) 4. Account Book (1814-'32) 8. Its Bell 5. The Union Chair 6. Two pew doors 7. Its Wall-stones 8. Its Bell

A Vestry on 18th April 1832 consisting of Landlord Corry Moutray, the Rev. J.J. Moutray (Curate-Assistant), Captain Alexander Moutray, Thomas Simpson, and the Churchwardens J.L. Speer and John Buchanan "agreed that the old Church will be taken down, and the materials disposed of by public auction".

John McCoy and Peter Flanagan softened this final sacrilege. On 29th April 1833 they agreed "to build the wall round the back side of the graveyard, in a masterly manner, at the rate of 3 shillings per Irish perch", and McCoy added "supposing I get the stones of the old Church". And so, the perimeter wall of Harvey's field, from the Hall to the Moutray enclosure remains a memorial to the 1622 Church—deep in the Ulsterheart a bleak parody of Wren's epitaph in St. Paul's Cathedral "If you want to see his memorial, look all around you."

During the last twenty years of St. Kerog's Church, 1812-32, 708 Baptisms were performed. For handy reference different spellings of the same surname are grouped together:

The following are probably from church records, to which Rev. Ingram had access. Copies of these church records are available from PRONI for a fee, and contain a bit more information (exact date, townland, and occupation of father), such as in 24 links in the list below provided by PRONI as part of my own search for the surname "McFarland". 112 other baptisms from Carnteel and Errigle Keerogue parishes may be seen on another page, not yet linked to below.
