A letter from Emily Jane (Kelly) (Caledon, County Tyrone) which was sent in 1956 to Thomas A. McFarland (Montana, USA) haqs helped in 2017 to tie together the descendents of Catherine, Andrew (Jr.), and Charlotte. Emily was a daughter of Charlotte (McFarland) Kelly. Charlotte, Andrew, and Catherine were siblings. Emily's letter implies that she was beyond the age of 82 (born before 1874). Among other references to people near her home, Emily writes "There will soon be nobody here at all, but they may all find a change. Far away fields are green", which implies that in 1956, all of Emily's close relatives were either beyond reproductive age, or had moved away from her community.

• The 2 generations before Andrew McFarland (of Garvey, born c. 1765). The Carnteel Church of Ireland Vestry book contains at least 10 pages entitled "Names Legend for Vestry book from X to Y" (where X and Y are years), altogether covering the entire period from 1711 to 1805. Three of these pages contain the name "Andrew McFarland", namely page 36 (1748-1754), page 52 (1771-1778), and page 72 (1795-1801). This name did not appear in Names Legends for years 1711-1747.

  An alternate website purports to contain a partial 1766 census of Carnteel Parish; 3 McFarlands are listed, but no Andrew.

• Andrew McFarland (of Garvey townland, born c. 1765) signed the Carnteel Parish Vestry Book "Names Legend" for 1795-1801, with the footnote "of Garvey Weaver"; Garvey is a townland in Carnteel Parish about 3 miles south of Ballygawley. This signer could not be Andrew (of Armaloughy townland, born 1790), since the minimum age for signing the Vestry book was 18, and signers needed enough wealth to contribute to Church funds, so most signers were probably well over 25. However, the Andrew McFarland (born est. 1765) could reasonably be the father of Andrew McFarland (of Armaloughy, born 1790).

  Also, the 1829 Freeholders registry for County Tyrone lists an Andrew McFarland living in Aughnacloy, the only McFarland listed for Carnteel Parish. It seems reasonable that this person is the same as the Andrew McFarland who signed the Carnteel Vestry Book in 1795-1801. Assuming he was born about 1760, this man would be about age 70 in 1829, and retired to a softer life in town. The 1829 Freeholders registry lists 7 other people named "Andrew McFarland" living elsewhere in County Tyrone.

  Evelynn Cartwright explains: Voters, Poll, Freemen and Freeholders Records are lists of people entitled to vote, or of people actually voting at elections. They are normally arranged on a county, city or borough basis. Freeholders were substantial farmers of the Irish counties who had the right to vote, while freemen or free citizens of cities and boroughs had votes. In cities, freeholders who qualified through their land as well as freemen who qualified through their trade voted in elections, but usually borough elections only involved freemen.

  The table data below is compatible with a 25-30 year age difference between father and son, a Vestry book signing at about age 30, and an arrival in Carnteel Parish in the early 1700s. The short-lived Andrew John #1 (not shown in table) born 1863 to the last of these 5 Andrews when the father was age 33.

  Assumptions: [1] Each of the 3 occurrences of "Andrew McFarland" in the Vestry books is the father of the next.   PRONI (Public Records Office of Northern Ireland) retains Church of Ireland parish records, including records for the parishes of Carnteel, Errigal Keerogue, Cappagh, and for both Church of Ireland and Presbyterian Church. In 2008, Carnteel baptism, marriage, and burial records, and Errigal Keerogue baptism records were searched from earliest (1805) to 1860 for persons named "McFarland" linked to the townland Armaloughy. Searching after 1860, and searches of Presbyterian records was not requested. In the box below is email from PRONI in Belfast suggesting what records they have, for future searching.

  There is no way you can easily determine which parish Andrew McFarland was born in. You mentioned that Andrew McFarland was buried in the chuchyard of Ballygawley Church, but you have not requested a search of these Church records. P. Ballygawley: Baptisms, 1842-1984; marriages, 1842-1927. MIC/1P/61 Marriage notices, 1860-1906. MIC/1P/230/4B C.I. Ballygawley (Armagh diocese) [Formed out of parts of Carnteel and Errigal Keerogue parishes] [Earliest registers destroyed in Dublin] Marriages, 1845-1922. MIC/1/323 Baptisms, 1879-; marriages, 1923-; burials, 1879-. In local custody From 1845, church marriage registers are the same as the civil registers, and always contain the date of the marriage, the names of the two parties, their age (often just whether they are over the age of majority), the names of the fathers of each party and their respective occupations, and the townland where each party resided. Pre-1845 marriage entries are as varied in content as the baptism entries. In addition to the names of the parties and the date of marriage, the townland where each resided is often given but rarely the names of the fathers. Burial registers are more standardised, usually indicating not only the name and the date of burial (or sometimes that of death) but also address and age.

  The father of Andrew (born 1790) appears to be listed on page 72 from the Carnteel Vestry book
  (Mormon microfilm #1279327). Andrew (born 1790) was about 11 years old in 1801.

• Andrew McFarland (of Ardmaloughy, born 1790), married probably about 1810 to Martha (Matty) Delap ( = Dunlop ) (also born about 1790, inferred from the birth of daughter Jane about 1811) . This couple had at least 5 daughters and one son, namely: Jane, Martha and Catherine (both from Carnteel parish records), .Margery, Mary, Andrew, and Charlotte (the last 3 females from Wills). Robert J. McFarland (in 1899) claimed that Andrew (born 1790) died at age 98, and his wife died at age 89. This claim is probably incorrect, since there is an Andrew McFarland buried 1857 in the churchyard of the Ballygawley Church of Ireland (died at age 67, hence born 1790); this Andrew is from "Ardmaloughy" (=Armaloughy) and therefore is very likely the father of Andrew (born c. 1830) , buried with his daughter Eliza (Elizabeth? 1814-1837). PRONI Wills index lists an 1857 Will for Andrew McFarland, but also states that the Will itself has not survived (*). Andrew (born 1790) is identified as the father of the groom on the 1862 marriage registration of Andrew (born 1830) reproduced below, though at the time of the marriage, Andrew (born 1790) had probably died since [1] he is not a witness to the marriage and [2] he is likely the person buried in the churchyard in 1857. He is listed in the Tithe Applotment for 1827 in Armaloughy, and listed as one of the wealthier landowners in Griffith's Valuation, resident on a large farm in Armaloughy. Perhaps to distinguish himself from his father (who lived in Garvey townland if Carnteel parish), he is identified as "of Ardmaloughy" on his headstone, an Irish-influenced spelling of the townland Armaloughy which is the place of residence of Andrew (born 1830) given on birth registrations for all his children, such as for Matilda, reproduced below. Carnteel parish records (on page 23) reveal the birth on 24 February 1819 of "Martha to Andrew McFarland of Armaloughy and Matty Delap his wife"

  An index of "Before 1845 Civil Registration of marriage records" survives, available as Morman film FHL # 100859. This document is an index only (the actual marriage records have not survived). It was checked for the surname "McFarland" (35 records, of which 5 were prior to 1822, the birth year of Andrew's daughter Catherine) and three similar surnames (McFarlaine, McFarlan, and McFarlane), none of which had a recognizable link to our family.

• James McFarland, appears in a 1821 court record in which the above Andrew McFarland (born 1790) leases his farm at the south tip of Armaloughy Townland (Carnteel parish). The above relationship tree shows Andrew and James as brothers, but their children married, and this puts a fraternal claim at risk: Alexander from Cooley townland near Omagh East in Termonmaguirk Parish. On page 174 of Ulsterheart there is a record of a James McFarland (wife Mary Beaty) bearing a daughter Jane in 1827 ( this record kept at the Ballygawley COI ). The Ballygawley COI records the death on 2- April 1904 of James McFarland age 90 of Millix,

• Jane and Alexander McFarland Jane's father (below) is almost certainly Andrew McFarland (born 1790), and is thus a sister of Catherine, Martha, Andrew (Jr.) and Charlotte. The record below from the Ballygawley COI photographed 14 August 2017. Alexander died in 1858 and left a long Will which mentions Andrew (born 1830) and Martha, but not their relationship to him.. Evelyn Cartwright claims to have found a death record for a Jane McFarland living at SixMileCross registration district (Cooley), died 18 April 1879 at age 68 (hence born about 1811). Alexander and Jane had one son (James Alexander) and 3 daughters (Ellen, Tilda or Matilda, and Emily. Ellen married Arthur Robinson in 1867, and 1901 census data for this family is below data is below. Arthur appears to have died in 1902, and Ellen in 1919, both in Belfast; Ellen is buried at Belfast City Cemetery, Glenalina Extension, grave L235. Matilda appears to have married William McKeown, but no further data on James, Matilda, or Emily. Civil birth record (1884) for Ellen's son Samuel is below.

• Martha (Matty) Delap, married probably to Andrew McFarland (born 1790). If this couple had a daughter Jane born about 1811 (as suggested by an 1879 death record for Jane fouond by Evelynn Cartwright), then Matha Delap was also born in the early 1790s, and her photograph in the Kelly album was taken shortly before she died. This couple had at least 6 daughters and one son, namely: Jane, Martha and Catherine (both from Carnteel parish records), Margery, Mary, Andrew, and Charlotte (the last 3 females from Wills). "Delap" is an alternate spelling of the Scottish surname "Dunlop", since the two names were pronounced alike in the mid 1800s. The record of the births of Andrew's first two daughters, Martha and Catherine (below), are the only records naming a wife for Andrew McFarland (born 1790, of Armaloughy), but Martha (= Matty?) is assumed to have been the mother of Andrew's other children, as well, with the possible exception of Andrew's daughter Eliza, born when Andrew would have been age 24, five years before the birth of his next child, Martha.

  Regarding records for the surname "Delap", Evelynn Cartwright found a Mrs. Delap (aged 70) died 6 January 1864 (record date 19 Jan), and "John Delap died 30 Dec 1868, only son of Seargeant Delap, late Omagh Constabulary". Using RootsIreland website, more records can be found, such as the death of Betty Delap in 1851, and death of Susan Delap in 1868, both in Dungannon (registrar's district).

• Martha McFarland, born 24 February 1819, daughter of Andrew McFarland (born 1790) of "Armaluckey" (Armaloughy) and Matty Delap, from Carnteel parish records. Martha is mentioned in the will of Archibald McCaughan, the husband of her sister Mary (McFarland) McCaughan. Martha also left a will naming her sister Mary, two neices (Charlotte McFarland and Maria Matilda Wilson) and a nephew (Robert R. Clements); Martha's will (dated 1898) states she is living with sister Mary (McFarland) McCaughan, but the 1901 Irish census states Martha is living with another sister Charlotte (see census below).

• Catherine McFarland, born 21 March 1822 (baptism record below). Catherine's civil marriage record (below) lists her age as 21 (implying a birth year of 1826 ? ). Married 26 March 1847 to John Wright at the Ballygawley COI, County Tyrone. The civil marriage record names Catherine's father "Andrew McFarland" and Andrew's townland "Ardmaloughy". The father must then be Andrew McFarland (born 1790). Late in life, Catherine lived with her daughter, Emily Mary Brown in Caledon (* Irish censuses), and during this time, Catherine assembled a photo album which has been passed down to the Renee McCormick family in County Tyrone. Catherine died between April and june of 1917 in the district of Dungannon, age at death was 95 (* Emerald Ancestors).

• Margery McFarland, born about 1827 (from ??), married on 16 November 1852 to Guy Clements at the Ballygawley Church of Ireland (civil record from Emerald Ancestors). This couple had at least one son, Robert Orr Clements (probably their only child), who is named in Guy's Will. There is a civil record of the death of Margery Clements in Omagh district between October and December of 1878, at age 51, estimated birth year 1827 (Emerald Ancestors). This couple is buried at the Clogherney Presbyterian Church (according to Kenny Clements in email of 15 Nov 2012).

• Guy Clements, married on 16 November 1852 to Margery McFarland at the Ballygawley Church of Ireland (civil record from Emerald Ancestors). Guy's Will names father-in-law Andrew McFarland as executor, and also names a son, Robert Orr Clements. Guy Clements' Will is dated both 1880 and 1888, with a marginal note stating he died 25 July 1883. Guy Clements is listed in Griffith's Valuation from Moylagh townland (as his Will). Guy and Margery Clements are buried at the Clogherney Presbyterian Church (according to Kenny Clements in email of 15 Nov 2012).

• Robert Orr Clements, born about 1854 (from civil death record). Married about 1904 to Jane Patricia Graham, but this couple having no children , from original image of 1911 Irish census. Robert died near Omagh between April and June of 1919 at the age of 65 (Emerald Ancestors).

  Ballygawley COI marriage record for Margery McFarland

• Mary McFarland, born about 1827 (from 1901 census), married on 24 December 1867 in the Ballygawley COI (* Emerald Ancestors) to Archibald McCaughan, who left a Will mentioning sister-in-law Martha McFarland, but this Will mentions no surviving children. Archibald's Will specifically gives permission for Martha McFarland to live in his house as a companion to his surviving wife, but in 1901 at least, Martha is living with another sister (Charlotte) in nearby Knocknacloy (also see Charlotte below). Archibald McCaughan was Grange County Tyrone Retired Head Constable R.I.C. who died 26 May 1897 (buried at Ballygawley Church of Ireland cemetery). The 1901 Irish census (below) lists Mary as a widow aged 74 living in house 13, Grange (Ballygawley, County Tyrone). One civil registration gave Mary's death occurring during the first quarter of 1907 at age 78, estimating her birth year as 1829, but the document below (supplied by Evelynn Cartwright) gives her death date as 1912 (at age 88). Mary was found in the 1911 census (by Evelynn Cartwright), listed as "Mary McGaughey, age 86, living at Grange with Lizzie Hopper. The Hoppers owned a farm adjacent to the McFarland farm in Armalloughy.

  Ballygawley COI burial records for Robert McFarland and Archibald McCaughan

• Andrew M^cFarland (born about 1830). Married Anastasia Sadleir on Sept. 24, 1862 at the Aughnacloy Church of Ireland, Carnteel Parish. When his children were born between 1863 and 1879 (see Matilda below), he was living in (Town land) Armaloughy, Carnteel Parish, County Tyrone, half mile east of Ballygawley. His son Robert claimed that Andrew died at age 64 in the year 1893 (alt 12 July 1893).The bible owned by Charlotte McFarland records her father (Andrew) dying 12 July 1893. An index of Irish deaths (Mormon microfilm #101597, vol. 3, page 63) records Andrew dying in 1893 at age 62. Apparently many in the town of Ballygawley are familiar with a legend that Andrew McFarland fell off Ruby Rock and broke his head, later dying of "brain fever". Note that PRONI church records describe an "Andrew Culberson McFarland" born 4 April 1828 to Andrew and Ellen (Caldwell) McFarland; this is most probably not the Andrew who married Anastasia Sadleir, though the birth dates are similar, because PRONI records the father of "Andrew Culberson McFarland" as a lawyer living in townland Culnaha.       *The term "spinster" in the mid-nineteenth century which literally meant "person who spins or weaves cloth. Here, the term "Spinster" is used to describe a woman who had not previously been married.

  The name "Henry Smith" on the above form remains a mystery. There is a "Henry Smith" in the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-1838) in the Parish of Errigal Keerogue, Coolagary Townland (year 1833).
